All You Need Is Love: An Eyewitness Account of When Spirituality Spread from the East to the West
Published in Paperback by Jodere Group (June, 2003)
Author: Nancy Cooke de Herrera
Average review score:

All You Need is Love
All You Need is Love is simply an experience that we are lucky enough to have Nancy de Herrera share with us. You can't make this stuff up!! Nancy talks about her spiritual path, a journey she shared in India with the Beatles, Donovan Leitch and Mike Love. It is so amazing to read about my favorite Beatles songs like "Dear Prudence" and "Bungalow Bill" and know their inspiration. I recommend this to everyone who transitioned with the 60's and for those who love the music.

Amazing Personal and Cultural Presentation
Nancy isn't a household name yet, but she will be! Her work with the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi made her pivotal in bringing Transcendental Meditation to the States, South America, and Europe. This is an amazing personal and cultural history that anyone interested in the 1960s, meditation, and world travel will not be able to put down.

If You LOVED Autobiography of a Yogi, You'll love this book
This remarkable book takes you behind-the-scenes in the extraordinary life of Nancy deHerrera. The loss of her soulmate was the impetus for a lifelong spiritual journey. Nancy served as the right hand person to Maharishi Mahesh Yogi in the sixties and became one of the first U.S. meditation teachers. She shares stories from her days in Rishikesh at the Ashram where she was liasion to John Lennon, George Harrison, Paul McCartney and other stars. Her meditation students included Greta Garbo, heiress Doris Duke, Madonna, Sheryl Crow and thousands of others. Nancy has probably met more yogi's, guru's, sadhu's and holy men than any other woman on the planet. Her engaging writing style captivates. A real page turner that I beleive anyone interested in spirituality will totally enjoy.

Andreas Gursky: Photographs from 1984 to the Present
Published in Hardcover by te Neues Publishing Company (April, 2001)
Authors: Marie Luise Syring, Lynne Cooke, Rupert Pfab, and Kunsthalle Dusseldorf
Average review score:

Exploring The Limits Of Photographic Representationalism
Andreas Gursky: Photographs From 1984 To The Present offers a grand, hugely diverse collection of larger than life images which taken as a whole conveys a gently ironic commentary of modernity in all its disparate manifestations. Although profoundly concerned with the role (and fate!) of man in the dis-articulated social tableau created by late-stage hyper-capitalism, Gursky is not making judgments about what he observes. To Quote from one of three introductory essays, this one written by Marie Luise Syring, "Gursky's work...reflects both the art forms and the everyday aesthetics of 20th-century society without resorting to open polemics-his images display too much indifference and beauty."

I was initially drawn to this series of photographs by the dust jacket illustration which is a somewhat unusual composition for Gursky, it turns out. I was touched immediately by the sparse, geometrically pleasing landscape running on endlessly in a striated banner of perfectly matched colour. There are several other 'naturalistic' studies included in this portfolio of 76 plates but most of the work examines the controlled chaos of urban settings, often featuring countless humans perambulating pointlessly in endless motion. "Being modern can also involve the danger of losing one's individuality and right to self-determination," Marie Luise Syring reminds us.

Gursky works on the boundary between painting and art photography. He tests and retests the critical distinctions seemingly inherent to these two representational domains. Thus many, but not all, of Gursky's photographs seem to have an explicitly clinical orientation. He is probing a fragile boundary and we know it. The cold truth which emanates from a stark objectification of the subject matter which compels Gursky is however always balanced by the way in which he floods his overrun visual fields with light and riotous colour. That I might personally prefer the warmer emotional tones of his naturalistic work to the harsher elements of the cityscapes is of course hardly the point. All of his work makes you think! And sometimes gasp at the sheer excess of talent and technique which propels the creation of such intensely intelligent, beautiful art.

MOMA exhibit
I saw this exhibit at the Museum of Fine Arts in NY recently and it was incredible. I'm usually not a fan of giant color photo exhibits, but this one really struck me. The complexity and beauty in his photographs will hit on something that you have most likely never seen. He has a gift of bringing common scenes like the supermarket into view in a way that makes you doubt you have ever shopped at one. If so, you would say, how did I miss that which is shown in this photograph? Looking at his photographs will bring on that same sense of smallness as pondering your little place on this little, common blue/green planet, around this one star that is the norm among billions upon billions.

The Cardiovascular Cure: How to Strengthen Your Self Defense Against Heart Attack and Stroke

The Most Important Book in your Life
My sister bought me this book, right after I had some heart palpitations and was admitted to a hospital. I read the book THREE times! Dr. Cooke verifies what I already know and believe and gave me many more additional insights as well.

But does it work? I applied Dr. Cooke's principles and after only six weeks I saw major results, confirmed by my cardiologist, as well as with blood tests.

Needless to say I bought 15 copies of the book and gave one to each of my family as presents. I will also buy more for my best friends.

This book truly saved my life.

honest doctor
It is not often that a Doctor writes so honestly. I love the recommendation to utilize diet and medication before resorting to invasive treatment.
Dr. Cooke has researched a timely and relevant field. He has the good sense to enlist assistance in articulating his research to the public in such an honest and straightforward manner.
He is a credit to his field of "The Youngest Science" as Dr. Lewis Thomas called it.

Desarrolle Sus Dones Profeticus / Developing Your Prophetic Gifting

Clarity in Prophecy
If you have been looking for some good solid guidelines, in Spanish, on the prophetic gifts and ministry, then this book may be for you. Graham seems to have brought clarity to the fog and mystery surrounding the prophetic and laid some good ground rules for developing the ministry in the spanish speaking world. Although there are a couple of surprises in the translation, the book flows well and easily through the different minefields associated with this kind of ministry.

His teaching is laced with testimonies that reflect a weight of experience. These give substance to the practices and principles he provides.

The words that come to mind in reviewing this books are solid foundations, clearly explained.

A great introduction to the prophetic
This was required reading in bible school, in a very practical class. This book was easy to follow through. There are many important principles & guidelines that are clearly explained. Graham Cooke has been around for a while and it is obvious in reading this book. This book is suitable for a person who is just beginning to operate in the prophetic ministry or looking to expand in it. Cooke presents biblical foundations for prophecy and why prophecy is for today. Even if you don't agree with everything he says, you will find this a very educational resource.

Finally, a balanced approach to the prophetic
Finding a book about prophecy isn't that difficult. Finding a good book about prophecy (other than The Good Book) is very difficult. Graham's book is a refreshing change from most of what is currently available.

Keeping a balanced and thoroughly scriptural approach to an often misunderstood gift, Graham gives a practical overview of dealing with the prophetic, from gifting to office. He deals extensively with the prophetic's role and relation to local church leadership, and lays out a common sense method of employing, judging, and encouraging sound biblical prophecy in a local church setting.

I highly recommend this book as a guide to pastors and others who are interested in better understanding the role and meaning of the prophetic in their everyday lives.

Grover, Grover, Come on Over! (Step into Reading Book)
Published in Library Binding by Random Library (April, 1991)
Authors: Tom Cooke, Children's Television Workshop, and Katharine K. Ross
Average review score:

A Great Book for Toddlers
This book is about how Grover asked his friends to provide him things, like sticks, newspaper, rags, paste and string to make a kite. Each friend passed by would say, "Come on over, Grover, let's play...." Then Grover replied, " Not yet. May I have your...." Step by step, Grover gathered all the parts to make a beautiful kite. It is a great story to arouse the curiosity of a little child and guide him how to give declines and make requests politely. My 2.75 years old falls in love with this book and can even tell the story himself.

Have some fun with Grover and his friends!
We've probably read this book a zillion-million times and both my daughter and I still love it. Grover is asked to play, time and time again. Each friend is given a polite decline and asked to share their particular treasure. Grover takes each offering and builds a kite which is the delight of all his friends in the end. Such a wonderful lesson in sharing, politeness, and creating. A plus is that the text is easy to read for 4 - 6 year olds. A definate must have for your library.

Gustav Mahler
Published in Unknown Binding by Cambridge University Press ()
Author: Deryck Cooke
Average review score:

A Classic And A Great Introduction To Mahler's Music
Musicologist and critic Deryck Cooke had that rare ability to communicate his enthusiasm for music and literature that would appeal to both the specialist and the layman. His tastes were vast and he could write about such diverse subjects as Delius' Violin Concerto, the works of the Brontes and the songs of Lennon and McCartney. He is perhaps best remembered for his (in his words) "performing version of the sketches of Mahler's 10th Symphony". He always made that distinction as he made it quite clear that only Mahler could complete the symphony. That he could even perform such a feat is a clear indication of his knowledge and love of Mahler's music. This present volume of his written as an introduction to Mahler's music has become a classic that still retains its freshness after 25 years. His clear writing style skillfully guides the listener through even the most thorniest aspects of Mahler's music. A book that should be on the shelf of any lover of Mahler's music or those approaching him afresh who want a sure and knowledgeable guide.

Concise but Creditable
Cooke has an insight into the works and personality of Mahler as the 'completer' of his Tenth Symphony. This book is a brief guide of the life and works of the composer. Interesting biographical detail is interspersed with information about each symphony. The inclusion of the text of the songs is a helpful addition as are the words of Mahler's earliest symphonic composition 'Das Klagende Lied.' Certainly a work that can be read and re-read with pleasure.

Juan Munoz
Published in Hardcover by Dia Art Foundation (April, 2000)
Authors: Lynne Cooke, Juan Munoz, N.Y.) Dia Center for the Arts (New York, Site Santa Fe (Gallery), and Juan Muunoz
Average review score:

An excellent document of an important artist's life
Sadly, Juan Munoz, the uniquely gifted artist from Spain, died far too early. His gifts as a sculptor and a draughtsman and a sage were most impressive. This catalogue which accompanies a travelling exhibition now in Los Angeles is in every way a fitting tribute to Munoz. Not only are the essays included insightful, they also heighten the excitement engendered by walking in and around and through the works of the clever and tender Munoz. No easy task this, as Munoz himself said 'much of the art is dependent on the interaction between the viewer and the pieces.' The caliber of photography is uniformly excellent with as much sensitivity to the various arrangements of Munoz' "Everyman" figurative sculptures as to the "Raincoat" drawings. When the catalogue was first published Munoz was very much alive and part of the exhibition at the Tate Modern in London. Now we have only his notes, some videos of his installations which include conversations with the artist, and this elegant catalogue to document a meaningful life and body of work. A Highly Recommended book on just about every level.

A lavish display of art
Juan Munoz is not only a catalog accompanying the first major survey of Munoz's work in this country, but the most comprehensive study of his work in print. Color illustrations of all the works in the exhibition accompany essays and an interview with the late artist; all of which reveal facets of his techniques and intentions. The lavish display of his art introduces readers to the range of his abilities.

The Language of Music
Published in Paperback by Oxford University Press (March, 1990)
Author: Deryck Cooke
Average review score:

An Engaging Read ! ! !
What gives music its meaning... is music akin to pure mathematics, to language... how do composers use forms and sounds to convey emotions, pictures and ideas and what are the basic idioms that are used to express those ideas in western music ?

When the book was first suggested to me, based on theme, I was expecting something "wishy washy" and not too keen on it, but for some reason I decided to give it a go, since it touches on one of my areas of reasearch. In the end it turned out to be one of those books that really got the old nogen brewing - - a book that sometimes you have to put down because it really gets your brain going or that if you read it before bedtime, you might wake up at 3:00 AM thinking about stuff he said ! - - Musicians as well as music lovers will appreciate it. You'll need to brush up on (or learn) basic music theory, however, it will be worth the effort... it might even change the way you hear your favorite symphony or music in general forever !

A well written book by a distinguished musicologist
This wonderful little book explains how the basic elements of musical expression communicate emotional content, both locally and on a larger scale. Highly recommended to anyone trying to understand how music works.

Deryck Cooke is the person who orchestrated Mahler's tenth symphony, starting with Mahler's original draft. Take a listen to the excellent Bournemouth Symphony/Simon Rattle recording.
